A Day at the Farm

One of our perennial favorite field trips is a day at a local farm each spring.  There's always something interesting to encounter (twice now we've arrived within an hour of piglets being born!), and the kids each have their favorite must-do activity there.  We were also really excited to show Little Weed #4 the opportunity to get up close and personal with so many farm animals.

From what #4 tells me, his early years with his first family were spent on a farm.  He is comfortable with animals and has an innate love for all things feathered or furry.  He has specific memories involving chickens, goats, and horses, so this first opportunity to share all of those things with him again here in his new life was (hopefully) going to be fun.

Well, upon arrival, #4 wasted no time at all getting up close and personal with a rooster.  Now, if you have any experience with roosters, they aren't necessarily the friendliest creatures. That didn't seem to bother #4 one bit.

In previous years, the chicken coop has been filled with hens, and the roosters kept their distance outside the fence. This year, it was very roosters-heavy, so I wasn't sure if the time would be as fun.  (Dr. Jiggles loves to catch and cuddle those hens!)  Thankfully, the roosters were somewhat cooperative, and the big boys had fun chasing them all around and attempting (only partially successfully) to corral them in the coop.

After we'd had our fill of chickens, we headed over to the cow barn.  All the kids enjoyed a turn milking the cow...

and cuddling the calf...

and sneaking outside to feed those hungry goats.

The boys tested their manhood climbing the hay mountain in the hay mow.

And #4 got up close and personal with a friendly old mare.

On the way home he asked me if he could PLEEEEZ get a horse.  I'm guessing giving in to the request for a bird might be a bit easier than trying to tackle horse ownership.  :)

All in all, it was a great day.  And our animal lover enjoyed every minute of it.
